Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does Sulfamethoxazole-Trimethoprim Cause Itching All Over The Body?
My son (24) been taking Sulfamethoxazole 800 MG-Trimethoprim for 13 days now ,tomorrow his last pill.Last night and today he s complaining about itching his entire body. There is no sign of a any rash or any redness. Could this be a side effect of the medication ?
Yes, this drug has been pretty commonly associated with skin problems including itch and rashes or even some serious problems. So I assume that this might be because of the drug if nothing else is evident for the cause of the itching.
However, it is not serious as settles without serious consequences and other causes for itching must also be considered before putting it to the drug. Stopping the drug and relief of the itching would be a sure sign for the relation and must be reported to your doctor anytime you see.
It is must also be disclosed on any future consultations as well. I would suggest stopping the drug if already taken for 12 days however this must be done with the consultation with your primary doctor if possible.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman
