Does Synthroid Affect Getting Pregnant?

Yes, I know some women with thyroid conditions, and they want to know if getting their menstrual perios every two weeks, and being on Synthroid. Does this prevent them from having babies. Especially if they are 38 to 40 years old?????? Thank you for your advice. I work with some, so I would like to find out for them.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Synthyroid or levothyroxine has to be taken lifelong in hypothyroid patients since they cannot secrete the hormone on their own. Even during pregnancy, thyroxine supplement should be continued and in fact the dose should be doubled to avoid fetal goitre.

Consuming Thyroid supplement does not affect the ability to concieve. Hence continue with the drug when you are planning for pregnancy. Hypothyroid patients should continue the drug and monitor TSH, Free T3 and T4 levels regularly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
