My friend has developed insomnia and cannot sleep. This has been going on now for about 4 weeks. What would you recommend to him as he takes several different prescriptions now... i.e. for diabetes, blood pressure, high colestrol, anxiety disorders in addition to claustaphobia... He has tried OTC sleeping pills in addition to at least 3 prescriptions sleeping pills..all seemed to work the opposite.. make him wide awake all night. Saw doctor today and now has another sleeping pill prescription called temazepam... Please help!!
Cannot say in this person's particular case. Often there are a wide variety of issues that one might not be aware of (alcohol use, other drugs that have effects on the brain, drug abuse, etc.). It's quite uncommon for sedatives to have a paradoxical effect of making someone more awake. Withdrawal from one of them, withdrawal from alcohol, use of amphetamine or other stimulants certainly causes insomnia. Many other psychiatric drugs like amphetamine, ritalin, etc also can cause insomnia.
