Does Tizanidine Interact With Citalopram?

tizanidine oral and citalopram oral....I have taken citalopram for several years and was given Tizanidine when I reached 65 because they would no longer prescribe Flexeril. I have Fibromyalgia and Osteo arithtis I take the Citalipram in the am and Tizanidine at bed time with Tylenol to help me sleep. Does the fact I am not taking them together lower the negitive impact? Sorry today is a bad pain day and my fingers are not working...my spelling is usually better

Hello,

Looking at your clinical condition and the medicines you are taken I would suggest to cut down the medicine and try to have just one or two drugs.

You are supposed to take all them together, some drugs really share the same pharmacological properties, your case needs clinical assessment again but taking too much medicine is not advisable.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

General & Family Physician Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali's  Response
Hello,

Yes, it may cause a harmful interaction.

Taking Tizanidine drug together with Citalopram drug can increase the risk of arrhytmia (irregular heart rhythm) that may be serious and potentially life-threatening.

You may be more susceptible if you have a heart condition called congenital long QT syndrome, other cardiac diseases, conduction abnormalities, or electrolyte disturbances.

You should seek immediate medical attention if you develop sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, shortness of breath, or palpitations during treatment with these medications, whether together or alone.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
