My sister has been taking 50mg Tramadol tablets for chronic arthritis pain. She takes ohter pills too. She has started having TIAs, I think, over the last two weeks. She finds herself standing in one place with her walker unable to take a step and she doesn t or can t call for help? Is tramadol the problem?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advise.
Tramadol is an opioid analgesic used mostly for visceral pain, so I advice not to take it in arthritic pain.
First of all rule out whether arthritic pain is because of age related osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis by consulting orthopedic doctor.Second thing use Aceclofenac tablet for pain relief only of required basis not daily.
Tramadol is not responsible for TIAs. However transient palpitation and raise of blood pressure has been reported within hours of taking Tramadol.
Have complete blood profile including coagulation markers, lipid profile to rule out coagulation or atherogenic abnormalities in her body, which actually is responsible for TIAs.

No. It is not commonly associated with stroke like symptoms. BUT then, you do not describe stroke like symptoms but more like sedation or confusion which any drug for pain might be associated with.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Matt Wachsman
