Does Valium Cause Permanent Brain Damage?

Can you have permanent brain damage from taking valium for back pain for a short time. My husband was prescribed 5mg of valium 3 x a day and he took it for 4 days, then was taken off and put on flexeril because the valium was not helping his back pain and had bad mental effects (like he was drunk). He took Flexeril, only 3 doses as prescribed and became non responsive, drooling, uriniating on himself. I called 911 and he was admitted to the hospital for 3 days. He s home now, but confused, slow to think, speak and process things and drooling. They r/o stroke at the hospital.

Hi There

After going through your query I understand your concern.

I would like to tell you that Valium can be used as skeletal muscle relaxant but concomitant use can cause sedation, respiratory depression etc and same with Flexeril , it can cause arrhythmia, palpitations etc. Elderly patients are more prone to side effects. Arrhythmia like Atrial Fibrillation or Atrial Flutter can cause stroke. Stroke is the reason for you husband's symptoms of confusion, slurred speech and drooling.

Kindly consult with a Neurologist for proper treatment of stroke.

Hope to have been Helpful.

Kind Regards
Dr. Navneet Bansal
