Does Xarelto Cause Fluctuations In Blood Sugar Levels?
My husband has Type II Diabetes and has always managed his numbers well with 500mg Metformin twice a day...he actually had to make sure the numbers didn t get too low (his normal was below 100). About 2 months ago, he developed a blood clot in his leg and his Doctor put him on Xarelto. He started out at 15mg twice a day for a month and then was put on 20mg once a day. Since he has been on Xarelto, his blood sugar levels have been all over the board. He writes down his numbers and the lowest he has had is 159 and the highest was 342. I also notice that there are other posts where people s numbers are jumping very high. Is this a coincidence or should this be something we should have his doctor change his RX to something else?
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern for your husband. Xarelto is composed of rivaroxaban, which is an anticoagulant (blood thinner) that prevents the formation of blood clots. What the doctor has advised him to take for his blood clot is right medication. Common side effects Xarelto include: muscle pain, itching and pain in arms or legs. This drug is not known to cause alteration in blood sugar levels. Probably increased blood sugar levels might have caused due to anxiety. He needs an evaluation by getting his Fasting Glucose, Post-prandial Glucose and Glycated Hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels checked. Kindly consult Diabetologist or Physician as he may require another drug to be given to control his blood glucose. In the meantime, kindly follow the diet pattern and exercise as advised to be followed. Hope the information provided is useful. All the best.
