Hello dear. welcome to HealthCareMagic. Thanks for trusting us. I have gone through your questions and understood your worries. may I know, how long have your son taken the medicines? what is the indication of giving those drugs? what kind of personality changes does he have? how old is he?
Zoloft contains sertraline which is an antidepressant (SSRI). Zoloft is used to treat depression,
obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, anxiety disorders,
post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). the side effects are diarrhea, nausea, headache, fatigue, drowsiness. the others minor are agitation, anorexia, anxiety, insomnia etc.
quetiapine is
antipsychotic 2nd generation and antimaniac agent. it is used to treat
schizophrenia in adults and children who are at least 13 years old, and
bipolar disorder (
manic depression) in adults and children who are at least 10 years old. the side effects include dizziness, trouble with movement, weakness, increased appetite, weight gain, sore throat, dry mouth, or nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, constipation.
Buspirone is an antianxiety drug, used to treat symptoms of anxiety, such as fear, tension, irritability, dizziness, pounding heartbeat, and other physical symptoms. the side effects are headache, dizziness, drowsiness, insomnia, nausea, upset stomach, nervousness or excitement etc.
for the interaction, using zoloft and buspirone together both can increase serotonin levels. but there's no interaction be found with quetiapine.
high levels of serotonin in the body can cause agitation,
hallucinations, fever, fast heart rate, overactive reflexes, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of coordination, fainting. if the alteration of mental state of your son is very severe and decrease his quality of life, better you consult with his treating doctor. he may need dosage adjustment or another better recommendation for his health. do not stop or lower the dosage without his doctor's permission since it may cause rebound syndrome and may harm him.
I hope these can be useful for your consideration to your son. If there's anything you need to know, feel free to ask me more in HCM. I hope your son will get better soon. send my best greetings to him. take care.
regards,
dr. Asti Yuliadha
