Does A CT Chest Scan Cause Health Hazards In A Person With Peripheral Neuropathy?

My Dr. ordered a CT chest scan w contrast bc of my peripheral neuropathy. She also ordered a sinus ct (although I am not sure why) which was done at the same time. The tech did two passes on my chest without telling me and now I am concerned about two things: one is the amount of radiation I have been exposed to this year. I am 57 and in the last 9 months I have had a mammogram and two chest X-rays plus this CT. I don t know whether to be upset with this new doctor or not. I asked for he lowest setting and one pass and they looked at me like I was nuts. Also, I feel like my neuropathy is worse since the scan so in case it was a reaction to the dye I ve been pushing water ( which they did not tell me to do at the center after I left) and eating cilantro (I know, Iknow, but Im flipping out). Is this the equivalent of having three ct scans in one day? Is my dr. over testing?

Hello,

When a doctor advises CT scan or X-ray he is well aware of all the hazards that is related to radiation. These scans provide very critical information about ones illness and are very important in determining the disease. I suggest you to trust your doctor and follow his advice as he knows best since he saw you physically and treating you as well. As far as CT dosing are concerned one can have 25 CT scans throughout his life with the current CT technology.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sameen Bin Naeem, General & Family Physician
