Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does A Head Injury Caused During Childhood Lead To Depression?
Can anosmia and olfactory problems caused by childhood injury (skull fracture and trauma) lead someone to become depressed and apathetic in their motivations as a latent feature of their childhood injuries? Also does hyposmia and anosmia cause sufferers to interpret pheromones and social cues either poorly or not at all? Also, if someone displays behaviour that may relate to the Autistic Spectrum and also has anosmia, is it more likely that they are not relative to the spectrum but inhibited by their anosmia in similar ways (note: the inability to respond to social cues?)
Childhood injury is unlikely to cause depression in adulthood. Hyposmia or anosmia could be due to any kind of pathology in the olfactory epithelium in the nasal passages.
However, the symptoms mentioned by you are of effective nature rather than due to any kind of injury. I suggest you consult a psychiatrist and neurologist.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Shailja Puri, Pathologist and Microbiologist
