Does A Heart Murmur Cause Atrial Fibrillation?

I was born prematurely by a month and as a result have had a heart murmur for over 63 yrs. I just had a life line screening which checked plaque in the arteries and other test for the heart since lately I was having shortness of breath. I just got a call from them and they said their cardiologist thinks I have A Fib. Does a heart murmur cause or mimic A Fib

Hi,
You are concerned about A fib. Usually any heart problem, whether you are born with it or you acquired, can cause heart rhythm problems. A fib is a kind of rhythm problem in which the your heart upper chamber contract faster than the lower ones. Hoping you know that the normal heart has 4 chambers and can be divided in to upper and lower and also into right land left chambers. You have not mentioned which type of murmur you have. Usually the left sided murmurs are prone for the rhythm problems.

Also your age and the factor that there are plaques in the arteries all cause rhythm problems. Thyroid , a gland in your neck, can also cause rhythm problems, if there is a disorder with it.

hope you understand well.
Any queries Please get back.
