Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband has had blood work done for life insurance. He is 44 years old...slightly overweight by about 20 lbs...but not obese. He is active. He does not smoke. He drinks but in moderation, a couple of times per week. In September his GGT levels were 558. Had been on antibiotics, so doctor felt it may be that. Tested again in October and were 370. Reduced drinking as well. Tested again recently and higher at 379. Could occassional drinking (less than 2-3 units a day, several days with no alcohol) cause this? He also has a large hernia in his left side groin area...could this be causing a reduction of blood flow to the liver or be impacting some function in the body?
Hi I understand your concern. The normal level of GGT is under 55 IU/L. In your case, GGT level tested thrice and it is high. GGT level is an indicator of alcohol abuse. So my advise is stop alcohol for few days and then test for GGT. Increase in GGT level is proportionate to amount of alcohol abuse. Reduction of blood flow to liver has no concern about GGT. GGT level decrease rapidly when you stop the alcohol. so stop the alcohol and do a test again. hope this helpful to you.
