Does An Infected Finger Caused By A Thorn Prick Need Doctor Consultation?
I was pricked by a bougainvillea thorn about 3 weeks ago. My finger is swollen and looks infected at the puncture area now. I have tried to look for a piece of the thorn but no luck. The finger is red and swollen near the nail. Should I go see my md or can you advise other treatments.
Hello, I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns. As per your description it seems that your finger is infected and I strongly recommend you to consult your physician because you need prompt antibiotic therapy which should prescribed by a doctor. Moreover you might require minor procedure like incision and drainage which can not be done without evaluation by a doctor. Consult your physician and get the following things done: 1.Start a short course of antibiotics like "ampiclox" for five to seven days. 2.You can take simple analgesics like "ibuprofen" or "diclofenac" for pain and discomfort. 3.If there is collection of pus you might require a simple procedure like "I n D"(Incision and drainage" to clear pus and debris the affected area. 4.Check your blood sugar level to rule diabetis.
Hope this information helps. Regards.
