Does Anesthesia Cause Permanent Damage To The Brain And Body?

I have had many problems for the past year as surgeries with 20 hours under anesthesia as well as UBS and UTI and dizziness and depression Could all this anesthesia cause permanent damage to my brain and body.. Three weeks ago I fell and now having worse dizziness. I hit top of my head very hard against closet wall. I am 75 and until all this I was doing good. Sometimes I am fearful of being alone which is a nusiance to my family. I just cant seem to get it together. I was diagnosed with cancer of uterus but said had not spread. I see a therapist and taking antidepresants which seem to not help. I feel I might as well go to assisted living as I dont believe I will ever function again. I do try to exercise 4 times week even though dizzy. Could you help me.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Anesthesia commonly has short term effects in the brain & body like temporary confusion, memory loss, dizziness, nausea, shivering & feeling cold. Patients recover to normal after a few days.

Sometimes, anesthesia cause long term memory loss. Post anesthesia, factors like new environment, loss of sleep, anxiety, medications can impact a patients mental function.

If any such symptoms arise, report to the treating doctor. He should help to manage the impact on recovery & overall health.

No worries, therapy & medication & medical aid will help you recover well, have patience. Stay active & take adequate rest.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
