Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I just turned 18 and i got myself a state I.D. and i signed up to be an organ donor, was it a bad idea? If i m ever in a bad car accident, god forbid, and i end up in critical condition with a good chance of surviving, will i survive or the fact i am an organ donor will i not, my father just scared me saying i won t survive????
I congratulate you on your caring enough to become an organ donor. No, being listed as a potential organ donor does not affect the treatment you receive if you are in critical condition. If you are injured with a chance of surviving, the medical people will do everything in their power to be sure you survive. The donor part only becomes applicable if there is no hope of survival, such as severe head trauma resulting in brain death. In that case, you are providing a life-saving service to someone needy despite your own death. Don't worry about your choice to be a donor affecting your survival chances.
