Does Breaking Diamicron Into Half Lessen Its Effectiveness?

I am confused if the instruction of my endocrinologist to take only half a tablet of 30 mg diamicron mr is okay. I have read somewhere that it is not right to break the tablet in half because it will lose its potency. Please give your opinion on this.
