Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have trigeminal neuropathic pain and have been using medicinal cannabis for pain relief. I started getting break outs, pimples, red forehead and scaly skin and redness around my scalp area. I know that cannabis causes the blood vessels to expand. I was taking a very small amount in a capsule before bed at night and got some carry over during day for pain relief. I saw a dermatologist today who diagnosed rosacea and put me on doxycyoline for one month. Do you think that this condition was caused by the medical cannabis. I did have skin rashes on chest and back but a Dermatologist looked at them 2 months ago and said they were sun damage. The other things I mentioned came on suddenly.
You are diagnosed with rosacea, your treating doctor has put you on prescription medicine doxycycline. You had been taking medicinal cannabis for pain relief from trigeminal neuralgia. You want to know if you got rosacea as a side effect of medicinal rosacea. Rosacea is commonly caused due to red wine, alcoholic beverages, cosmetic products, temperature extremes, exposure to Sun or wind, drugs that dilate blood vessels, including some blood pressure medication, etc.
If you have taken much of medicinal cannabis (it also dilates blood vessels) than it could have triggered symptoms of cannabis though you cannot rule out other causes that can also be responsible for the same. You can taper the dose of medicinal cannabis so that rosacea can be controlled effectively. Do continue to take the prescription medicines as instructed by your treating doctor.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
