Does Ceasing From Alcohol Intake Reduce The ALT Levels?

my liver test came back high - the ALT SGPT is 131 - i was drinking that week but not heavily - can I get it back down to a lower level but cutting back on wine? Also, 1 year ago with my other Dr my levels were slighly elevated and I was surprised that within a year they were high

Dear sir/madam,
ALT is a marker of liver damage upon use of alcohol. luckily God has given liver self-repair ability, and hence, after one stops consuming alcohol, the liver repairs itself and ALT levels will come to normal. But, it is not a good sign to have high levels. In case there is alcoholic hepatitis or cirrhosis, the normalcy of ALT will take 5-6 months.

Also, meanwhile, you can consume foods like papaya, cucumber, nuts and green leafy vegetables, whivh help in liver function restoration. It is also advisable to replenish your vitamins B-complex, specially thiamine, as alcohol depletes them

Regards,
Dr. Sonia
