Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My brother is HIV positive and was diagnosed with Hodgkin s lymphoma, he has been having chemotherapy, His ESR was around 50 before therapy and go down at the beginning of the chemo and now go back to around 45. I have read that high ESR is a bad prognosis. Is it rise after chemo important or during chemo? Does the chemotherapy increase ESR or not? Thank you
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) is only of prognostic significance. It doesn't have any diagnostic value or predict outcome of treatment. Also, now the values what you have mentioned as to 50 and back to 45 doesn't have much significance as the increase is only about 2 fold above normal. There are other parameters which needs to be investigated to know the outcome of treatment, which will be evaluated by the treating doctors.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
