Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My uncle is having Clavix 75 mg. I believe this is causing him to have diarrea with blood constantly. He has gone to the hospital for blood transfusion twice in the last 3 weeks and I am concern. What can you tell me about that medication and if is posible to change it for a milder one? He is 86 years old, he is a bout 5.8 ft tall and weights about 150 lb. He had a stroke 10 years ago. Thanks.
Clavix is a drug that causes thinning of blood. Human intestines throughout have a very rich blood supply through tiny vessels. It's very likely that due to thinning, the blood is leaking out of these tiny vessels into the intestines and is causing bloody diarrhoea because blood is an irritant to the intestines. But As patient is taking clavix 75mg for secondary prevention of stroke so we cannot stop it for once.
The best way to deal the problem is to consult your physician and to rule out other possible causes by investigating the patient and if the investigations turn out to be normal( which means clavix is the cause) then there are strategies to cope with this problem, that may include changing the medicine or reducing its dose.
I hope you found this helpful.
if any further question you can write to me me any time.
best regards
