Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I took 40 mgs of adderall xr that I've been prescribed at around 3 in the afternoon. It's now 1:49 AM and my heart rate is still fast, my eyes are bloodshot, and I feel extremely lightheaded like I'm about to lose consciousness at times. I don't know if this has to do with adderall's interaction with the melatonin in my body or abnormal serotonin or dopamine levels or what. Also my eyes are very itchy and dry-feeling. My question is: would it be a good idea to go to sleep? Would it be better to stay up to keep my melatonin levels down? What should I do?
Adderall is a stimulant that is used to improve focus in conditions such as ADHD. A side effect of stimulants is they can increase heart rate, cause nervousness, anxiety, and symptoms of anxiety such as lightheadedness as you describe. This is a primary effect of Adderall, and not due to any interaction with melatonin, serotonin, or dopamine.
It would be safe to sleep, and in fact I recommend sleeping so these side effects can wear off. I would call your doctor and report these symptoms, as your dose likely needs to be lowered.
I hope this is helpful to you.
