Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had Dengue Fever in Vietnam in 1967 ; was treated in several Army hospitals, with ice-water and rubbing alcohol rubdowns to hold the fever below 108. I well remember the horrendous joint and chest pains. Now at age 74 I have had both knees replaced, both hips replaced, and have had two lower back fusions. Is there any possible connection between dengue (break-bone fever) and osteo-arthritis later in life?
Dengue fevers cause an immune response that can involve the joints, as well as many other organ systems, as you have experienced. This inflammation in the joints is typically transient and does not cause permanent damage, and in your case, I think it would be very unlikely to be related to your joint issues, which are more likely related to chronic wear and tear over the years.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
