Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I seem to be addicted to chocolate. Every evening after dinner I just NEED my dark-chocolate covered almonds. Or dark chocolate bark with almond pieces. And I eat quite a few, not just a few bites. I m afraid that my body is becoming pre-diabetic and that scares me. But it doesn t make me stop eating the chocolate.
I totally understand your concerns about your health and i understand your passion regarding chocolate.
The following points should be taken into consideration: 1- type 2 Diabetes is due to insulin resistance that is mainly due to obesity. It has a major genetic predisposition. So to understand the risks you should evaluate your weight and preferably your BMI. If there have relatives who have type 2 diabetes too then you are at a higher risk. 2- you should start screening for diabetes at the age of 45 years in order to detect diabetes early on if it present. 3- the risk for type 1 diabetes is not correlated with eating habits because it is a autoimmune disease. 4- It is fine to eat chocolate if you are well controlled, not obese and have a healthy lifestyle.
Best regards
