Does Excessive Phlegm Due To Respiratory Infection Cause Nausea And Abdominal Bloating?

I ve been sick since last Wednesday (10 days now), head cold, sore glands, headache. Then I developed an upper respiratory infection and was put on antibiotics. I am still coughing up phlegm and have over the past 5 days felt nauseous and now have bloating, very gassy too. Is this due the the phlegm? I still feel generally unwell, but every time I eat I feel sick, no vomiting but I do have softer stools occasionally.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history of respiratory tract infection for over 10 days treatment with antibiotics, now coughing phlegm, gases, bloating of abdomen and so on.
The cause of bloating can be due to aerophagia that occurs with excessive coughing, ingestion of infected sputum causing intestinal infection and thus loose stools too.
Antibiotics too can cause similar problems.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Consult a Gastroenterologist or your Doctor for clinical evaluation, investigations of stool, blood and phlegm.
May be you need another antibiotic,
Probiotics along with multivitamins.
PPI like Omeprazole.
X-ray of abdomen and Ultrasonography to know any other cause of bloating.
See the response to the treatment and have proper management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
