Does Exposure To CT Scan Radiation Affect The Quality Of Sperm?
Hi Dr. Rynne I very recently had 2 CT scans of my abdomen. My wife and I are trying to have a baby, I m concerned if this will have any potentially negitive effects on my sperm quality, or cause birth defects if she indeed does get pregnant. Thank You Ian
A CT scan is x-ray computed tomography and is an analysis that can be performed in various areas of the body such as the head or the abdominal cavity. The test is performed to obtain an image of the interior of the body. Several 2D images will be taken to make up a 3D image. The radiation can be potentially damaging for the quality of the sperm. However, only radiation that is above the threshold of 5 Gy pose real risk to the sperm cells. The CT scan radiations deliver doses ranging from 0.03 to 0.05 Gy in the area where the CT scan is performed. Also, if the CT scan is not performed in the pelvic region, the amount of radiation that gets to the reproductive system is very low, sometimes under 0.001 Gy.
