Does Exposure To An Open Wound On The Head Cause HIV Infection?

I m a police officer and came into contact with a man who had a big gash on his head that was bleeding, in the process of touching him I got some blood on my hands and I bite my cuticles and had little cuts around them from biting the skin. What is the risk of getting hiv or something else?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

As a physician I would like to tell you that there is greater risk of getting HIV infection thought open wound. But, if you take post-exposure prophylaxis within time, you have absolutely nothing to worry.

Thus, I would suggest that you should visit your physician as soon as possible to get evaluated and to get started with post exposure prophylaxis for HIV.

Hope this will help you. Feel free to ask any further question. Have a nice Day.

Regards,
Dr. Abhijeet
