Does Folic Acid Intake Cause Green Stool?

Does folic acid cause green stool? I ve been taking folic acid 1 tablet per day (400mcg) for several months. Since yesterday my stool is turning green. The consistency is still normal. I don t have any abdominal pain, I just had (something kike) cramp on my stomach this morning. And it s been two times for today that I had to go to the toilet. Thank you for your concern.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I don't find a relation between green stools and folic acid intake. Green stools are formed as a result of food indigestion. They can be caused by a diet full of fiber that are not properly digested, and a quick intestinal transit. If you were late taking laxatives it may be the reasons. Also, a gastrointestinal viral infection may cause it.

Keep yourself under observations. Take prebiotics such Enterogermina to establish the intestinal flora. Drink lots of water to prevent dehydration. Lower the fiber intake.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
