Does Giving Expired Paregoric To An Infant Cause Any Side Effects?
my granddaughter had a preemie weighing 1 lb. 11 oz. She is now about 13 lbs. and just turned 0ne year old. She is teething now and her other grandmother gave her some paregoric that is about 30 years old. I was very upset when I heard this. I cant imagine a grandmother doing this. Is this harmful, and what about the properties of the ingredients??
Paregoric is opioid formulation. It is centrally acting (acts on brain) drug. It is contraindicated in children. It can cause sedation. Above this, it was expired medicine. So this can cause more damage. Better to keep observation on your child for next 24-48 hours. If he develops excessive sleepiness, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain then immediately take him to pediatrician. Better to avoid such incidents in future.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
