Does Having Expired Implanon Intact Cause Mood Swings, Weight Gain And Bleeding?
I have had the implanon implant for 3 years and was due out in April. I am trying to organise an appointment to have it removed. Recently I am of really low mood and my weight gain has been noticeable could this be due to the implant running out and is there any danger with it being in few months longer than it should be. I ve been bleeding non stop since April as well they never stopped during the 3 years but become more regular every month

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
After 3 years of insertion, Implanom stops providing hormone so contraception is discontinued.
Fertility returns mostly immediately after this. At the most, it can be delayed to one year.
So the risk of pregnancy is there even if implant is not removed. Mood swings are possible due to psychological insecurity. Weight gain does not seem to be related.
Another risk is about swelling, fibrosis or infection at the site of insertion of implant.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
