Does Having Unprotected Anal Sex Automatically Lead To HIV?
Dear Dr. I m a male, 22 years old. I recently had sexual encounter with another person (anal) without protection that I had just met. I know the person has had other encounters however has claimed they ve been tested and is clear but has had an encounter with another since the test. I ve grown with a huge anxiety I may have in contact with HIV. I ve read about PEP, however it s now becoming DAY 4 since the incident. I ve noticed that it s only affective for 3 days. I need to know what I have to do, it s very important as anxiety is taking over and I ve grown a lot a fear. Thank you in advance Tomchris
I respect your concern and anxiety regarding HIV. Since 4 days has been elapsed after unprotected anal intercourse now prophylaxis will not be beneficial at all. However risk of transmission of HIV is higher in anal intercourse, it is not necessary to have HIV infection in one exposure only.
I advise you to control your anxiety, use condoms for next intercourse and have HIV testing done after six months to be sure of not having HIV infection.
Thank you.
