Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been diagnosed with bell s palsy. I am taking steroids, plus an antibiotic pill and drops for an ear infection. I was reading that some consider that bell s palsy is caused by the herpes virus. However I have never suffered from cold sores and do not have genital herpes. What caused this to happen and how long will it last? How long should I wait before I see a doctor again? Should I be concerned about eye damage?
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of Bell's Palsy which is due to inflammation or viral infiltration of the nerve that can cause infection of the facial nerve that is a seventh cranial nerve and supplies muscles of face. Yes Bell's palsy can occur due to activation of virus which remains latent. I would suggest you to
- Maintain hygiene and and apply cold compresses every 4 hourly alternative with warm compresses.
- Do mouth stretching exercises such as blow in and out after closing nostrils.
You should consult ortho and maxillofacial surgeon once for proper examination as you should be concerned about eye damage as it can leads to drooping of eyelids and start with proper course of antibiotics and anti inflammatory medications and vitamin supplement.
Hope your concern has been resolved.
Get Well Soon.
Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
