Does Hiatal Hernia Lead To Severe Stomach Pain Accompanied With Belching?

I have a hiatal hernia for over 30 years. In the last couple months I get severe pain in the stomach area that stabs to my back and my jaw. I also have lots of belching with it. It take over an hour for it to go away. I do take aciphex and the last 2 times I had this I doubled up the dosage. Do you think this is from the hernia? I also had my gallbladder out a few years ago with no problems since then.

Hello,

A hiatal hernia can cause severe acid reflux and belching. As a first line management, you can take antacids like Omeprazole or Pantoprazole for symptomatic relief.

If symptoms persist better to consult a gastroenterologist and plan for an endoscopy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
