Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Ok, so my husband is 52 years old. He is not overweight and never has been. He has a desk job. I was taking my BP at a drug store on the weekend because I have had elevated pressure for that past five years, but it is under great control with ramipril 5 mg daily. (Yesterday my reading was 112/73). Scott s however, was 138/101. We were both shocked!!! And now I am terribly worried. I have asked him to check it himself at a drug store unit for this week and get the slips and I am making him an appointment with our doctor for next week. However, does this reading put him at imminent risk of a heart attack or stroke?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Nishad BN's Response
Hi Thank you for asking HCM. I have gone through your query. Your husband's diastolic blood pressure is increased. He is most likely having a moderate level hypertension. If blood pressure remains high for long duration it can cause remodeling of heart and subsequently to heart attack. It can also increase the risk of stroke. BP should be controlled by drug therapy and life style modification. Ecg should be taken and in case of any hypertrophy of myocardium then i would recommend ACE inhibitor or Angiotensin receptor blocker group of drugs. This will get his BP controlled and decreases the risk of heart attack and stroke. Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear. Thanks.
