Does High Level Of Bilirubin In A Child Indicate Liver Disease?
My 9 yr old has high level of bilirubin after going to doctor a week ago for constipation issues. His original bloodwork/urine showed bilirubin which they said was part of an infection now a second test today shows high level of bilirubin and now we are going to liver specialist. He has no pain and his urine is still somewhat yellow. Is his body still trying to get rid of the infection or is this more of a liver disease or liver damage issue?
Hello dear Understand your concern. Billirubin is pigment produced by heme metabolism. Processed in to the liver and excreted in urine and stool. Yes high level of billirubin is associated with liver disease/hepatitis, as liver unable to clear the billirubin and blood level of it rises. Along with this ALT, AST, ALP also rise. It is called jaundice when there is yellowish discoloration of sclera, nail, mucous membrane and urine.
Following are the causes of high billirubin: Hepatitis Haemolysis Stone in bile duct, billiary stricture, cancer of gall bladder, pancreas Gall bladder disease Pancreatitis
I think it is mainly due to hepatitis in your case Do whole liver profile. Take rest Avoid outside food Take lots of carbohydrate in diet
Hope this may help yuo. Best regards Dr. Sagar
