Does High Sugar Levels Delay Pregnancy?

I am a 24 year old type 1 diabetic. I have had poor blood glucose control throughout my 12 years being a diabetic. I am 6'1" and 54 kilos. My last period was very different. It went for 2 days and was very light and a dark brown colour, not the usual bright red and 5 day period of heavy flow. I am now almost 2 weeks late for my period. I have done a home pregnancy test and it has shown negative. Is there any chance that my high sugar levels etc. would be affecting the urine I am testing and not showing the hgc hormone?

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

Having diabetes and any chronic disease can affect your menstrual cycle and make it irregular. So it is most likely that you may just have had an abnormal menstrual cycle and are not pregnant.

Modern urine pregnancy tests are very sensitive and generally will become positive within a month or so after your period. Diabetics have frequent urination, and just to be extra careful that your urine was not too diluted to register on the test, you can repeated using your first morning urine, or see a physician to do a blood pregnancy test.

If you desire pregnancy, I strongly suggest you consult with a high-risk obstetrician before conceiving as there can be a high chance of certain kinds of birth defects and miscarriage if your hemoglobin A1C is very elevated. You also should work with you endocrinologist to tighten your control as best as possible before pregnancy. If you decide to postpone pregnancy until your sugar is under better control I advise you to consult with an OBGYN about contraception.

So in summary, if your urine was very diluted when you did the test or if you had not yet missed a period it could have given you a false-negative test. I suggest you repeat the test with first morning urine after you have missed a period, however it is most likely that you just had an abnormal period, which can happen to any woman and may resolve itself with your next cycle.

I hope my advice was helpful and that I adequately answered your question today. Best wishes, Dr. Brown
