Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Great thanks......I have recently been diagnosed with hyperparathyoidism, and am scheduled for surgery with the Norman group in Tampa next week. I have developed a serious tremor when I anesthetize patients ( I am a dentist. Could this be related to my hyperparathyroidism?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advise.
The tremor you are having can be caused by hyperthyroidism so it is important to have the treatment and follow up as recommended by your doctor. Propanolol can be used in this case and should help reduce tremor from hyperthyroidism while you expect treatment for it (surgery).
If the treatment of the hyperthyroidism with normalization of TSH does not improve the tremor than other causes should be considered like physiologic tremor (tremor on action, meaning tremor getting worse when you use the hands and reach towards a target), alcohol related tremor (if you use alcohol, it is similar to physiologic tremor) and depending on the age parkinson can be a cause in rare cases (tremor worse at rest and improves with attention or reaching an object).
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Kind regards, Antoneta Zotaj, MD
