Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was prescribed fluconazole for esophageal candida (diagnosed via endoscopy and biopsy). I am afraid to take it because I have had many episodes of tachycardia over the years (with trips to the ER and calling 911) and had a very rapid heartbeat once for a minute or less - must have been about 300 beats per minute, and got tachycardia when taking doxycycline for walking pneumonia last fall and also often get short bursts of uneven heart rhythm when taking certain supplements. I went to a functional medicine doctor who prescribed nystatin and oil of oregano capsules. Then I read that nystatin can cause tachycardia. Now I afraid to take either one. Note: as far as I know I don t have any other disease that might cause esophageal candida. Your advice would be appreciated!!!
Hi & Welcome to HCM. Least likely to cause tachycardia when given orally.
Nystatin when taken by mouth is used to treat fungalinfections in the mouth, pharynx, or oesophagus. Given in this way Nystatin is not absorbed into your bloodstream and least likely to cause adverse effects. Its most common localized side effects include mouth irritation, itching, burning sensation, & stomach upset which are mild in nature and are well tolerated. However, although rare but it can cause a serious allergic reaction in the form of swelling in the face or tongue, burning in the eyes, skin pain, followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and associated with tachycardia (fast heart rate) and trouble breathing. If you experience any of the above symptoms from the oral tablets and liquid, you must visit the ER immediately.
