Does Intake Of Theraflu Lead To Chronic Depression?

Thanks. My 16 year old nephew is apparently having an adverse reaction to theraflu becoming very depressed and suicidal. He was adopted at age 3 from an orphanage in Viet Nam and first started telling his parents about it the last few days. They stopped the theraflu after a few days. It will be two weeks before they can get an appointment with a psychiatrist they were referred to by another adoptive parent of an Asian kid. Any information or suggestions about what we can do?

Hi,

Theraflu is a combination of medicines for flu and cold symptoms. This medicine is to be used according to the directions of your doctor. Though, the symptoms of depression and suicidal ideations have not been described as the side effects of this drug, still, dizziness, drowsiness, feeling restless or excited as well as sleep disturbances have been described some of the common symptoms.

It is better, that you stopped using this drug, as this drug should not be used for a prolonged time and particularly, never use this drug for sleep purpose. However, the symptoms in your case seem more to be unrelated to this drug. These may be due to some psychological problem. Hence, you are advised to see a psychiatrist in this regards and treatment done accordingly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
