Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My sister is a recovering alcoholic who has not had a drink in 4 months. She has been having episodes where she blanked out. So she went to doctor..they did blood work and found a platelet count of 11! Could her previous alcohol consumption have caused this and can she recover from it if it is the cause?
Alcohol consumption is not directly related to platelet count. However, I suggest you to get a repeat blood count along with peripheral blood smear examination to determine the actual platelet count. If the platelet count remains so low then the underlying cause needs to be determined.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
