Does Intake Of Medication Cause Irregular Periods?

On Feb 3rd this year I had protected sex. That month my period was 4 days late. On March I had bronchitis and my period was 8 days late. On April I had tonsillitis and I was on penicillin and my periods came on the 17. I m unsure if I am pregnant or is it intermittent bleeding. Can you please explain. I don t want to be pregnant.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for your query.

Stress, illness, strenuous exercise, sudden weight changes, obesity, travel, functional ovarian cysts, Thyroid hormone imbalances, Polycystic ovaries can all cause irregular periods.

I would :
- elicit a detailed medical, personal and family history
- do a complete physical exam
- run relevant blood tests (complete blood count, TSH, free T3, free T4, reproductive hormone levels, beta hcg)
-do an ultrasound to rule out cysts

Based on the above findings, I could arrive at a diagnosis.

In your situation, illness seems to have taken a toll on you which could be the reason for the irregular periods.
I recommend :
-take a home pregnancy test
-if negative, use contraception to avoid pregnancy
- see your OBGYN if your cycles don't regularize once your health is better.
-Have a nutritious diet and do moderate exercise to prevent illness and Maintain healthy weight.
-take a vitamin c supplement (500 mg once a day) if you feel like you are falling sick.

Hope this helps.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Wish you good health
