Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does Large Amount Of Pain Killers During Pregnancy Cause Liver Problem?
I am a 35 year old female who has a slightly enlarged liver and elevated liver enzymes following a pregnancy complicated by severe bilateral hydronephrosis. I recently had litho twice to remove stones on left side ( one 13 mm, one 10 mm and one 5 mm). I am having problems with random severe cramps on the right front side of my lower rib cage. My dr. gave me muscles relaxants to carry with me all the time but they make me too tired to function. Do you have any suggestions as to the cause of the pain and treatment for it? Could the large amounts of pain medications taken during my pregnancy be the cause of my liver problems?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Prolonged use of pain killers may cause adverse effects on your liver and kidney. It may also affect the health of your baby also. Better to avoid pain killers especially in pregnancy period. You can take paracetamol if required. Analgesics like Diclofenac and ibuprofen should not be used in pregnancy.
Hope I have answered your query.
