Does Long-term Intake Of Librax For IBS Cause Side Effects?

My husband is 66 years of age and has been on librax for iIBS for years. Insurance will no longer approve this medication. Their reasoning ; librax shouldn t be taken by a man of his age. Why? They did approve him for Bendyl, which he is willing to try How can librax be damaging and should I be worried about something happening to him from taking Librax for so long?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Librax contain chlordiazepoxide and clinidium bromide which may cause below side effects.

Dizziness, Drowsiness, Tiredness, Weakness, Blurred vision, Dry eyes, Dry mouth, Nausea, Vomiting, Constipation, Abdominal bloating, Swelling, Skin rash.

It's anti cholinergic effect in old age lead to decreased sweating, dry/hot/flushed skin, fast or irregular heartbeat, loss of coordination, slurred speech, fainting, uncontrollable or unusual muscle movements, mental/mood changes (such as confusion, agitation, unusual excitement, depression, or strange thoughts), difficulty urinating, etcetera.

Better to avoid taking this drug.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Penchila Prasad Kandikattu
