Does Long Term Usage Of Prednisone Damages The Immunity?

Hi, I have suffered all my life with brittle asthma I m 30 years old for 10 years I took 40mg of prednisolone steroids with no break I have awful mosaic verrucas 10 on each foot do painful they crack & bleed every week I see a chiropodist but to no avail they don t even shrink with treatment. In 2012 I was pregnant and a wart appeared on my fingernail it s still here and eaten half my nail away and now another has appeared on my index finger they also crack & bleed and are so painful will they ever go? Or has prednisolone totally damaged my immunity to fight them off?

Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.

Prednisone suppresses the immune system.
Prednisone is used as an anti-inflammatory or an immunosuppressant medication.
Your immune system will be suppressed so long you are taking prednisone. It's an immunosuppressant-it's the main function of the drug.
Warts are caused by a viral infection, specifically by one of the many types of human papillomavirus (HPV).It typically occurs on humans' hands or feet but often in other locations.
You are more susceptible to viral infection and others .Prednisolone /Prednisone can weaken the immune system but does not totally damage it.
