Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does Long Term Use Of Anti-seizure Medication Cause Short Term Memory Loss?
I began having them after a blow to the lower part of my head, in the soft tissue above the back of neck.,at 12 years of age. I m 62 now, have short term memory and was told it was due to long term use of anti-seizure meds. I now have some occasional jerks in arms. Changes like swelling in face. Should I think about switching from dilantin to keppra or are the reactions about the same?
Dilantin can cause memory loss and it could be the cause in your case. Most of the anti seizure medications including Keppra can cause memory loss however change of drug may make things better as its not necessary that the other drug will also cause loss of memory. I would advise you to visit the treating doctor and get your medicine changed to some other drug.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Anoop Kumar, General & Family Physician
