Does Medication For Shingles Cause Lower Back Pain?

My wife currently has shingles. She has been taking acyclovir for about a week and her symptoms have been improving; however, she is currently experiencing lower back pain and thinks it may be kidney failure. She did have a twisting event earlier today, about 8-10 hours ago, but is very worried the pain may be associated with the heavy meds. Wondering about whether to go to the ER or wait to see regular Dr tomorrow. Thoughts?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

She needs to have urgent renal functions as with acyclovir the monitoring of renal function is a must. Keeping good hydration may help to avoid renal side effects by avoiding crystal nephropathy. Ultrasound KUB may be done to look for any signs of hydronephrosis or swelling on kidenys. Using analgesics like acetaminophen may be helpful. Others are avoided as those may precipitate renal damage.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Wishing her a speedy recovery.

Regards,
