Does My Behavioral Symptoms Indicate Psychotic Break?

I think I had a psychotic episode over the summer. I was on a new antidepressant that was really messing with my head and the emotional stress of the relationship I was in plus the stress of moving pushed me over. I lost control of a lot of my actions and was mainly acting on impulses, I did things I would never do normally and felt like nothing I was doing was real. I started hurting myself again. Even looking back on it it seems like it was all fake or all a dream. It lasted a few weeks and then I got a bit more control back. Would this be classified as a psychotic break or episode?

Hello,

I can understand your concern. Sometimes you can experience the things you are feeling because of the depression for which you have started the antidepressants. As any antidepressant takes about 3 to 4 weeks to have desired level in blood and desired effects, patients go through agony for that much time. Now as some weeks have passed, you are having a continuous desired level of the drug in your blood which is having control of your depression and your actions. Shortly, we can say, the new medicine has started working for you. You should feel better as you continue the medicine and should not feel the depressive spells you experienced and so you can say, you are healing.

However, if you feel the symptoms back that you are describing while on the medicine, you should consult your psychiatrist.

I hope this answer helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. Let me know if you have follow up questions.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
