Does Non-working Pancreas Cause Shortness Of Breath?

Yes my brother is diabetic and was told that his pancreas is not working properly. he is having shortness of breath and pain since early today in the chest. I told him to go to the ER. Can the pancreas cause shortness of breath because of lack of oxygen?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi..
I appreciate your concern about chest pain. Let me try to explain about the cause of chest pain and shortness of breath in diabetic person.
I see similar kind of cases in my practice. Ischaemic Heart disease due to narrowing of coronary arteries is co-morbid condition commonly seen with diabetes. Many a time there won't be any chest pain (Silent MI) and person might suffer heart attack. I would suggest you to get EKG(Electrocardiography) done as soon as possible and consult your physician to interpret the result to rule out cardiac problem.
Additionally, rule out other modifiable risk factors such as history of smoking, high lipid in blood(Dyslipidaemia),History of alcohol consumption, family history of heart disease etc. If all are positive then very high chances of ischaemic heart disease are present.
Pain in chest due to pancreatic cause can be ruled out by doing serum amylase and lipase enzymes.

I would suggest you to get EKG,Treadmill test done. I hope this has answered your question.

Wish you healthy and happy life

Regards
Dr.Hamid
