Does Pain In The Ear Of My 9-year-old Daughter Need Immediate Medical Attention?

My 9 year old daughter is complaining of left ear pain. She said it starts along the outside of her ear and it feel like it s spreading to the inside of her ear and and to the lateral. She says it hurts when she burps, hiccups or sneezes and when she chews crunchy foods. It s been happening for about a week, but not consistent. She rates her pain 7/10 but not constant. She says the pain is sharp and throbs/pulses. We cleaned out her ears with no c/o pain, and she has no jaw popping or extrusion. There is no redness or swelling. We gave her Tylenol, but not sure if we should take her to the M.D. as her symptoms are not consistent. She s not a complainer, so we are now concerned...........

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Ear pain with intensity scale of 7/10 is of major concern and most likely diagnosis is acute otitis media via strep pneumonia bacteria or else. She requires immediate consultation with her pediatrician or ENT specialist for prescription of needed antibiotics in form of azithromycin, erythromycin or other macrolides antibiotics for best early recovery and prevent further spread of infection to inner ear from middle ear.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
