My husband has MSA and to control pain has been medicated successfully with pethidine. Just recently he was hospitalised with pneumonia and has now been put on OxyContin. Why is it doctors today have this adverse reaction to pethidine?? The OxyContin has again left my husband confused and very lethargic and I m now fighting to have him returned to pethidine which doesn t cause these symptoms.
It is not used commonly now because of the risk of addiction and also because its metabolite (breakdown product) is associated with significant potential problems.
I hope this helps
