hi doctor. I have hypothyroidism. along without blood disorder. I take 50 mg Synthroid for my thyroid. I had unprotected sex about 2 and half weeks ago. my period is a week late. since then, my hypothyroid symptoms have come back I would say and have been a little worse then before. can pregnancy make the symptoms of hypothyroid worsen significantly, even as early as 2 weeks? I do no know yet for sure if i am pregnant and it was unplanned. thank you for your time I hope this question isn t confusing!
Hi, Hypothyroidism can be definitely affected during pregnancy. Thyroid hormones are very essential during early stages of fetal development. Hence, there might be increase in signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism. As early as 5th week of gestation there is increase in thyroid stimulating hormone levels in the blood. Therefore it is advisable to check the thyroid hormone levels as soon as the pregnancy is detected and monitored throughout the pregnancy to keep the thyroid hormone levels normal for the adequate development of the fetus. If your pregnancy test turns out to be negative, I still advice you to consult your doctor to know the cause. Thanks
